Project Date: March 2026
Project Type: Municipal Water Supply & Rural Drinking Water Renovation
Applied Products: HDPE Water Supply Pipe & PVC-U Pressure Water Pipe
Project Region: East Africa

Not every section of a water supply network has the same requirements.
Some pipelines need to handle ground movement, long-distance water transmission, and challenging construction conditions. Others need to provide a cost-effective solution for residential communities and rural distribution networks.
For this municipal and rural water supply project in East Africa, we combined HDPE water supply pipes and PVC-U pressure pipes according to different pipeline functions, installation conditions, and project requirements.
The result was a practical balance between reliability, installation efficiency, and overall project cost.
The project included both urban and rural pipeline sections, creating several challenges:
Instead of using one pipe material throughout the entire project, the pipeline system was divided according to its actual operating conditions.
For buried municipal mains, long-distance transmission sections, and selected trenchless installation areas, PE100 HDPE water supply pipes were selected.
Key advantages include:
For sections requiring additional flexibility and joint reliability, HDPE provided a strong solution for the main water transmission network.
For residential branches, conventional rural water supply networks, and sections with relatively straightforward installation conditions, PVC-U pressure water pipes were selected.
Their advantages include:
This allowed the project to control the cost of the extensive branch network without compromising the requirements of the designed water supply system.
Different pipe materials were installed using connection methods appropriate to each system.
The HDPE main lines used butt fusion and electrofusion where specified, creating continuous, high-integrity joints when properly installed and tested.
For selected road-crossing sections, trenchless installation methods were considered to reduce excavation and minimize disruption to existing roads and infrastructure.
PVC-U branch pipes used socket-type connections, providing an efficient installation method for conventional rural and community pipeline sections.
Before commissioning, the installed pipeline sections were subjected to the specified pressure and leakage testing procedures in accordance with the applicable project requirements.
The key to this project was not simply choosing the “best” pipe.
It was choosing the right pipe for the right section.
